A chance to work, close to home
For this outreach, we wanted to try something alongside sharing food: offer people a way to earn money while helping clean up the streets around them. We brought trash bags and gloves and headed out in the truck to meet our neighbors in Houston. The idea was simple enough to explain in a conversation: collect a bag of trash and get paid for the work.
We stopped to speak with people, handed out supplies, and explained that we would come back for the filled bags. Taking time to explain the offer was part of the work, too. We wanted people to understand what we were asking and what they would receive, so they could decide whether they wanted to take part.
Coming back for the bags
The video follows those conversations from the truck window to the return visits. Neighbors came back with bags of collected trash, and we paid them for what they had picked up. Some brought more than one bag. Seeing people return gave us a chance to thank them and recognize the time and effort they had put into the cleanup.
We know a small cleanup cannot answer every need someone is facing. Our goal that day was to offer a practical opportunity and follow through on it. The payment mattered, and so did treating each person with respect as we explained the work, received the bags, and spoke together.
Caring for people and the streets we share
By the end, the collected bags were gathered in the bed of the truck. They were a visible result of the work our neighbors had done. Each bag held trash picked up from the surrounding area, and together they showed what this first cleanup had brought in. We were grateful to everyone who chose to help.
As followers of Jesus, we want our faith to shape the way we serve. On this day, that meant bringing supplies, offering paid work, and keeping our word when people returned. We hope to keep learning from these outreaches and find more ways to care for our neighbors and the places we share.
